Shining Through the Fog: People and Purpose in Higher Education

After a wonderful holiday spent with family, I was making a 200-mile trip home from South Texas. The typical night drive shifted unexpectedly, and I was then navigating through dense fog—a holiday trip experience few would forget. Imagine the dark night with dense fog. You inch forward, unsure of what lies ahead, unable to see past the next few dozen feet. Yet, you adapt—slowing down, keeping a steady course, and trusting the fog will lift. And when it does, it feels as though it was never there.

This drive reminded me of the fog surrounding higher education today. Institutions are grappling with uncertainty—unclear pathways through constrained funding, shifting student demands, AI integration, and intense competition. The fog is thick, and navigating it requires resilience, deliberate actions, collaboration, and a clear sense of direction.

The Fog in Higher Ed

  • Funding Priorities: Just as drivers must prioritize safety over speed in poor visibility, higher ed leaders face hard decisions about where to allocate limited resources. Competing priorities often cloud the way forward.
  • Shifting Student Demands: Imagine sleek cars speeding past in the fog—symbolic of competitors rapidly innovating to meet student needs. Students expect modern services, personalized experiences, and career-ready outcomes, leaving some institutions struggling to keep pace.
  • AI Uncertainty: Like headlights cutting through fog, institutions are beginning to explore AI’s potential. But for many, the path remains murky. How to integrate AI responsibly, ethically, and effectively is a question without easy answers.

How to Navigate the Fog

  • Leverage Technology with Purpose: Technology is a tool, not the destination. Institutions must use it wisely, balancing innovation with the needs and capabilities of their students, faculty, staff, and communities.
  • Focus on People: The true differentiator is not technology, but people. Leadership, a service mindset, and the ability to interpret and act on data without losing sight of human instincts will define success.
  • People as Beacons of Light: The willingness of people to adapt remains one of the most critical factors in determining an institution’s success—now more than ever. Skilling and empowering teams to reach higher levels of performance will demand greater accountability and effort from individuals and groups alike. However, those who are motivated, inspired, and aligned with the institution’s goals will not only excel but also serve as beacons of hope and leadership for others. These individuals will shine through the fog, guiding their institutions forward and exemplifying the resilience and innovation needed to thrive in uncertain times.
  • Communicate Relentlessly: In fog, communication is everything. Clear, consistent messages help everyone stay aligned. Leadership must prepare teams for rough patches ahead while reminding them that clarity will come and the journey to the destination is worth it. Open and transparent communication is a pillar of stability for institutions. News of expected transformations and messages of the need for agility should be common and exciting conversations on campus.
  • Collaborate as One: Embracing a convoy mentality is crucial—everyone must move forward together, providing mutual support. Departments and campuses can no longer afford to operate in silos; the entire institution must function as a unified entity, aligned with a shared mission. This approach fosters new collaborations, unlocking opportunities and innovative outcomes that might not have been possible otherwise.

Trust the Process

Just as fog on the road eventually clears, the challenges facing higher education will pass. The key is to slow down when needed, assess and adjust course, and maintain confidence in the collective journey. Leaders and individuals alike must trust that with communication, collaboration, and purposeful action, higher education institutions will emerge from the fog stronger, more innovative, and better equipped to serve their missions.

The fog may be dense and unpredictable, but the path becomes clear when people across campus move forward boldly together.
